How to Use Distant Horizons on a Minecraft Server
See terrain far beyond your render distance with Distant Horizons, and let the server share it with players.
Distant Horizons draws simplified terrain far past your normal render distance, so you can see mountains kilometres away without the cost of loading those chunks fully.
On your computer
Distant Horizons is mainly a client mod. Install it in your launcher for Fabric, Forge or NeoForge and your Minecraft version. It builds distant terrain from chunks you've already been near.
On the server (optional)
Recent versions of Distant Horizons can also run on the server and send distant terrain to players, so they see far away straight after joining.
- Make sure the server runs Fabric, Forge or NeoForge on the same version as players.
- Open Package Manager, click Browse packages, search for Distant Horizons, and install it.
- Package changes are queued and applied the next time the server starts, so restart it from Console when you're done.
Players need Distant Horizons in their game to see it; players without it can still join.
Things to know
- Generating distant terrain uses CPU and disk. Pre-generating the world with Chunky first helps a lot.
- Keep the server's
view-distancenormal (8–12); Distant Horizons handles the far distance. - It works best alongside Sodium on Fabric, on the client.
