How to Change the World Seed on a Minecraft Server

Generate your Minecraft world from a specific seed.

Updated 1 min read

A seed decides how the world generates. The same seed on the same version always gives the same terrain.

The seed only applies to a new world, so using one on an existing server means making a new world.

Set the seed

  1. In Console, click Stop.
  2. Go to Backups and create a backup of your current world.
  3. Open Files and click server.properties to open the Minecraft Server Properties editor.
  4. Set level-seed to your seed. Seeds can be numbers or words.
  5. Make a new world: rename or delete the world, world_nether and world_the_end folders, or change level-name to a new name.
  6. Save and click Start.

The server generates the new world from your seed as it starts.

Check it worked

Run seed in Console. It prints the seed the world uses.

Note

Seeds behave differently between Minecraft versions. A seed from a video made on another version may not give the same world.
