How to Allocate More RAM on Modded Minecraft Launchers
Where to find the memory setting in every popular Minecraft launcher, and how much to give a modpack.
Modpacks need more memory than vanilla Minecraft. Each launcher has its own memory setting.
How much to give
| Modpack | RAM for the game |
|---|---|
| Light (under 100 mods) | 4–6 GB |
| Medium (100–200 mods) | 6–8 GB |
| Heavy (200+ mods) | 8–10 GB |
Leave at least 4 GB for your computer.
Where the setting is
| Launcher | Setting |
|---|---|
| Minecraft Launcher (official) | Installations → ⋯ on the profile → Edit → More options → JVM arguments: change -Xmx2G to e.g. -Xmx6G |
| CurseForge app | Settings → Minecraft → Java Settings → Allocated Memory |
| Modrinth App | Settings → Default instance options → Memory allocated |
| Prism Launcher / MultiMC | Settings → Java → Maximum memory allocation |
| ATLauncher | Settings → Java/Minecraft → Maximum Memory/RAM |
| GDLauncher | Settings → Java → Java memory |
| Technic Launcher | Launcher Options → Java Settings → Memory |
| FTB App | Settings → Java (or the instance's own settings) → memory slider |
Each launcher also has a per-instance setting if you only want more memory for one modpack. Restart the game after changing it.
Note
This is the memory on your computer. Your Beacon server's memory is set by its plan; see How Much RAM Does a Modded Minecraft Server Need?.
