How to Unlock or Unpair a Modpack in the Modrinth App

Unlink a modpack instance in the Modrinth App so you can add, remove or update its mods yourself.

Updated 1 min read

When you install a modpack from Modrinth, the Modrinth App links the instance to that modpack. While it's linked, the app manages the mods for you: it updates the whole pack, and you can't add or remove individual mods.

To change the mods yourself, unlink it.

  1. Go to Library and open the modpack instance.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu and choose Settings.
  3. Open Installation (or Modpack).
  4. Click Unlink instance (also called Unpair) and confirm.

The instance keeps its mods, but it's now a normal instance. You can add mods with Add content and remove them from the list.

Warning

Once unlinked, the instance no longer gets modpack updates. Make a copy first (the ⋮ menu → Duplicate) if you might want to go back.

Keeping your server in step

If you change the mods on your computer, the Beacon server needs the same changes, or players see "mod mismatch" when they join. In the panel:

  • Add mods from Package Manager → Browse packages.
  • Remove them from the installed list in Package Manager.
  • Restart the server from Console afterwards.

Client-only mods (minimaps, shaders) only go on your computer.
