How to Change Your Server Software
Switch between Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, or change Minecraft version, from the Package Manager.
Updated 1 min read
Your server's software (Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge or NeoForge) and its Minecraft version are both chosen in Package Manager.
Change software or version
- Go to Backups and create a backup.
- Go to Package Manager and click Browse packages.
- Search for the software you want (Paper, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Vanilla) and open it.
- Pick the Minecraft version and click Install.
- Read what the panel says will change, and confirm:
- This replaces what is installed: the old server software is removed.
- Will swap runtime: the right Java version is installed for you.
- Packages will stop working: plugins or mods that don't run on the new software or version are listed.
- Package changes are queued and applied the next time the server starts, so restart it from Console when you're done.
Your world, settings and player data stay.
What to know before switching
- Plugins and mods don't mix. Paper runs plugins; Fabric, Forge and NeoForge run mods. Switching between them means replacing your plugins or mods.
- Upgrading is fine, downgrading isn't. A world opened on a newer Minecraft version may not load on an older one. Restore a backup if you need to go back.
- Updating Minecraft works the same way: open your current software and pick the newer version.
Tip
For a modpack, install the modpack instead; it picks the software, version and Java for you.
