How to Allocate More RAM in GDLauncher
Give Minecraft more memory in the GDLauncher so modpacks load and run smoothly.
Updated 1 min read
Modpacks need more memory than vanilla Minecraft. If your game freezes on loading, crashes with "Out of memory", or stutters badly, give it more RAM.
Note
This is the memory on your computer, for your game. Your Beacon server has its own memory, set by its plan.
How much to give
| Modpack | RAM for the game |
|---|---|
| Light (under 100 mods) | 4–6 GB |
| Medium (100–200 mods) | 6–8 GB |
| Heavy (200+ mods) | 8–10 GB |
Leave at least 4 GB for your computer. Giving the game more than it needs doesn't make it faster and can make it stutter.
Set it in the GDLauncher
- Open GDLauncher and click the settings (gear) icon.
- Go to Java.
- Drag the Java memory slider, or type the amount in MB (1 GB = 1024 MB).
- To change one instance only, right-click it, choose Manage, open its Settings, and turn on its own memory setting.
Start the game again for the change to apply.
Still running out of memory?
- Close other heavy programs while you play.
- Check you're on 64-bit Java. The launcher's bundled Java is usually fine.
- Remove shader packs and very large resource packs to test.
Playing on a Beacon server? The server needs enough RAM too. See How Much RAM Does a Modded Minecraft Server Need?.
