# How to Install and Configure LuckPerms on a Minecraft Server

**LuckPerms** is one of the most widely used permissions plugins for Minecraft. It lets you create ranks, assign permissions, and control which players can use commands without manually editing the configuration of every plugin.

LuckPerms supports **Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, Purpur, Fabric, Velocity, and BungeeCord**.

This guide explains how to install and configure LuckPerms on a Minecraft server hosted with Beacon Hosting.

> **[WARNING]** Use the LuckPerms build that matches your server software. A Bukkit/Paper JAR will not load as a Fabric mod, and a Fabric JAR does not belong in `plugins`.

## Which LuckPerms Build Should You Use?

The correct LuckPerms build depends on your Minecraft server software.

### Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, or Purpur

Use the **Bukkit** build.

Upload it to:

```text
plugins/
```

### Fabric

Use the **Fabric** build.

Upload it to:

```text
mods/
```

### Velocity

Use the **Velocity** build.

Install it in:

```text
plugins/
```

on the **Velocity proxy**.

### BungeeCord or Waterfall

Use the **Bungee** build.

Install it in:

```text
plugins/
```

on the **BungeeCord or Waterfall proxy**.

Velocity and BungeeCord are **proxies**, not backend Minecraft servers. A network normally has LuckPerms installed on the proxy and on each backend server when network-wide permissions are required.

If you are unsure which software your server uses, check the **Startup** page in your Beacon Hosting control panel.

## Method 1: Install LuckPerms With Package Manager

The easiest method on Beacon Hosting is to use the built-in **Package Manager** when the appropriate LuckPerms package is available.

1. Open your server from [Server Selection](https://www.beaconhosting.org/servers).
2. Open **Package Manager** in the sidebar.
3. Search for **LuckPerms**.
4. Select the package matching your server software.
5. Click **Install**.
6. Restart the server from **Console**.

For example, a Paper server should use the Bukkit build, while a Fabric server should use the Fabric build.

After the installation finishes, continue to [Verify the installation](#verify-the-installation).

## Method 2: Upload the LuckPerms JAR Manually

Manual installation is useful if LuckPerms is not available in Package Manager or you need a specific compatible version.

### Step 1: Download LuckPerms

Download LuckPerms from the official project:

[LuckPerms Downloads](https://luckperms.net/download)

Choose the build matching your server software.

Do not download plugin JARs from random third-party websites.

### Step 2: Stop the Server

Open **Console** and stop the server.

Wait until it is completely offline before replacing or uploading plugin or mod files.

### Step 3: Upload the JAR

Open **Files** in the server sidebar.

For Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, or Purpur:

```text
plugins/
```

For Fabric:

```text
mods/
```

Upload the LuckPerms `.jar` file into the appropriate directory.

For example:

```text
plugins/LuckPerms-Bukkit.jar
```

or:

```text
mods/LuckPerms-Fabric.jar
```

Do not place the JAR inside another folder.

> **[INFO]** After the first successful startup, LuckPerms creates its own data directory next to the JAR, such as `plugins/LuckPerms/` or `mods/LuckPerms/`. Keep this directory because it contains LuckPerms configuration and data.

### Step 4: Start the Server

Start the server from **Console**.

Watch the startup log and confirm that LuckPerms loads without errors.

## How to Verify LuckPerms Is Installed

Once the server has started, use the Beacon **Console** to run:

```text
lp
```

You do not need to include `/` when using the server console.

If LuckPerms loaded correctly, it should display its command help.

You can then run:

```text
lp info
```

This displays information about the LuckPerms installation, including its version and storage configuration.

> **[WARNING]** Running `/lp` in-game may initially return a permission error because your player does not yet have permission to use LuckPerms commands. Use the server Console for the initial setup.

## How to Give Yourself LuckPerms Administrator Access

From the Beacon **Console**, replace `PlayerName` with your Minecraft username:

```text
lp user PlayerName permission set luckperms.* true
```

This gives the player the LuckPerms wildcard permission.

Alternatively, create an administrator group:

```text
lp creategroup admin
lp group admin permission set luckperms.* true
lp user PlayerName parent add admin
```

Using:

```text
parent add
```

adds the group without removing the player's existing groups.

By contrast:

```text
parent set
```

replaces the player's existing parent groups.

Once you have the required permissions, join the server and run:

```text
/lp
```

You should now be able to use LuckPerms commands in-game.

## How to Use the LuckPerms Web Editor

LuckPerms includes a web editor that makes creating ranks and assigning permissions easier.

From the server Console, run:

```text
lp editor
```

LuckPerms will generate a temporary web-editor URL.

Open that URL in your browser and make your changes.

When you finish, click **Save** in the editor. LuckPerms will apply the generated changes to your server.

The web editor is particularly useful when configuring multiple groups and permissions because you can manage them without manually entering every command.

## How to Create a LuckPerms Rank

Create a group with:

```text
lp creategroup vip
```

Then assign a permission:

```text
lp group vip permission set example.permission true
```

Finally, give the player the rank:

```text
lp user PlayerName parent add vip
```

Replace `example.permission` with an actual permission node provided by the plugin you are configuring.

For example, another plugin might document a permission such as:

```text
exampleplugin.command
```

LuckPerms stores and evaluates permission nodes. It does **not** invent permission nodes for other plugins.

## How to Check a Player's LuckPerms Permissions

To inspect a player, run:

```text
lp user PlayerName info
```

This can help you determine which groups and permissions the player currently has.

If a permission is not working, checking the player's groups and inherited permissions is one of the first troubleshooting steps to perform.

## How to Use LuckPerms on a Minecraft Network

A single Paper or Fabric server can use LuckPerms without a database.

For a network using **Velocity or BungeeCord**, however, you will normally want the different LuckPerms instances to share the same storage backend so that ranks and permissions remain consistent between servers.

For example:

```text
Proxy
│
├── Lobby
├── Survival
└── Skyblock
```

A player given a rank on the network can then have that rank available across the relevant servers.

LuckPerms supports database storage options including **MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL**.

After installing LuckPerms, configure its storage in:

```text
LuckPerms/config.yml
```

After changing the storage configuration, restart the server.

## Do You Need MySQL for LuckPerms?

**No.**

A standalone Minecraft server does not need MySQL simply to use LuckPerms.

File-based storage is suitable for many individual servers.

A shared database becomes more useful when multiple LuckPerms instances need to share permission data across a Minecraft network.

## Troubleshooting

### `lp` Does Nothing in Console

Check that:

* LuckPerms is installed in `plugins` for Bukkit-compatible servers.
* LuckPerms is installed in `mods` for Fabric.
* You installed the correct LuckPerms build.
* The JAR is not inside another directory.
* The startup log does not show a LuckPerms error.
* Your LuckPerms version is compatible with the server software and Minecraft version.

If the startup log contains an error such as `UnsupportedClassVersion`, check the Java version required by the LuckPerms build and your server software.

### `/lp` Works in Console but Not In-Game

Your player probably does not yet have permission to use LuckPerms commands.

Use the server Console to grant the required permissions first:

```text
lp user PlayerName permission set luckperms.* true
```

Then reconnect to the server.

### LuckPerms Does Not Appear in the Plugin List

If you are using Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, or Purpur, LuckPerms should be installed in:

```text
plugins/
```

A Fabric installation belongs in:

```text
mods/
```

A Fabric mod will not appear in the Bukkit plugin list.

Check the server startup log to confirm whether LuckPerms loaded successfully.

### A Permission Does Not Work

Check the following:

1. Confirm that the permission node is spelled exactly as documented by the plugin.
2. Run `lp user PlayerName info`.
3. Check which groups the player belongs to.
4. Check inherited permissions.
5. Look for a more specific permission set to `false`.
6. Confirm that the plugin providing the permission is installed and loaded.

LuckPerms cannot grant functionality from a plugin that is not installed.

## Summary

* **Paper / Spigot / Bukkit / Purpur:** LuckPerms Bukkit build → `plugins`
* **Fabric:** LuckPerms Fabric build → `mods`
* **Velocity:** LuckPerms Velocity build → `plugins` on the proxy
* **BungeeCord / Waterfall:** LuckPerms Bungee build → `plugins` on the proxy
* Install through **Package Manager** or upload the official JAR manually.
* Use the **Beacon Console** for initial LuckPerms commands.
* `lp info` verifies the installation.
* Use `lp creategroup` to create ranks.
* Use `lp user PlayerName parent add group` to assign ranks.
* Use `lp editor` for the web-based permission editor.
* A database is optional for standalone servers but useful for networks.
