## Install Forge

1. Open your server and go to **Backups**. Create a backup, in case you want to go back.
2. Go to **Package Manager** and click **Browse packages**.
3. Search for **Forge** and open it.
4. Pick the **Minecraft version** you want and click **Install**.
5. The panel shows what will change. Installing server software **replaces what is installed**, and it may **swap the Java runtime** to the one that version needs. Confirm.
6. Package changes are queued and applied the next time the server starts, so restart it from **Console** when you're done.

Your world carries over. Forge mods go in the `mods` folder.

## Modpacks

If you're installing Forge for a modpack, install the **modpack** instead. It brings the right Forge version, its mods and the right Java for you. See [How to Install and Update a Modpack](/knowledgebase/how-to-install-and-update-a-modpack-on-a-minecraft-server).

## Forge or NeoForge?

For Minecraft 1.20.2 and newer, most mods moved to **NeoForge**, a fork of Forge. Check which one your mods are made for. See [How to Install NeoForge](/knowledgebase/how-to-install-neoforge-on-a-minecraft-server).

> [!TIP]
> Forge's first start takes longer than usual while it sets itself up. Watch **Console** until it says `Done`.
