How to Choose a Minecraft Server Host
Short answer: choose a host with a modern high-clock CPU, enough RAM for your player count, NVMe storage and a server location close to your players. Then check that backups and DDoS protection are included, and that the renewal price — not just the first month — fits your budget. Those factors decide how well your server runs far more than the host's marketing.
The checklist
| What to check | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| CPU | A recent high-clock processor, such as AMD Ryzen 7000/9000 series |
| RAM | Enough for your player count and mods, with room to upgrade |
| Storage | NVMe, with enough space for your world to grow |
| Location | A data centre close to most of your players |
| Network | DDoS protection included, good bandwidth |
| Backups | Automatic or on-demand backups included, easy to restore |
| Control panel | Console, file manager, SFTP, server software and modpack installs |
| Support | A published response time and real people answering |
| Pricing | A clear renewal price, no surprise add-ons |
| Flexibility | Upgrade, downgrade and cancel without hassle |
1. CPU: the most overlooked factor
Minecraft runs most of its game logic on a single CPU thread, so per-core speed matters more than core count. A host using recent desktop-class processors at high clock speeds will run the same server more smoothly than one using older, lower-clocked server CPUs. Hosts don't always say which CPU they use; if one won't tell you, that tells you something.

2. RAM: enough, not the most
Match RAM to your server. As a rough guide, 2 GB suits 2–5 vanilla players, 4 GB suits 5–10, and modpacks need 6 GB or more. Extra RAM beyond what the server uses doesn't make it faster.

3. Server location
Every millisecond between a player and the server shows up as delay when breaking blocks or fighting. Choose a location near most of your players. If your group is spread across continents, pick the location in the middle of where they are.
4. Storage
NVMe storage loads chunks and saves the world quickly, which matters most for big maps and modpacks. Check the disk allowance too.
5. DDoS protection and network
Public servers get attacked. Make sure DDoS protection is included rather than an add-on, and that it covers Minecraft traffic specifically.
6. Backups
You will want to roll back a griefed base or a broken update at some point. Look for backups you can create and restore yourself from the panel.
7. The control panel
A good panel lets you switch server software (Paper, Fabric, Forge and others), install modpacks and plugins, edit files, open the console and connect over SFTP without contacting support.
8. Support
Look for a published response target and support that understands Minecraft. Check whether support is included or a paid tier.
9. Pricing and renewal
Compare the renewal price. Some hosts advertise a cheap first month and renew much higher. Also check for setup fees, paid backups and player slot limits.

10. Free trial and cancellation
A free trial or easy cancellation lets you test performance with your own players before committing.
Red flags
- The host won't name its CPU.
- Plans are sold by player slots rather than resources.
- Backups or DDoS protection cost extra.
- The renewal price is much higher than the first payment.
- No published support hours or response time.
