Modpacks need more memory than vanilla Minecraft. If your game freezes on loading, crashes with "Out of memory", or stutters badly, give it more RAM.

> [!NOTE]
> This is the memory on **your computer**, for your game. Your Beacon server has its own memory, set by its plan.

## How much to give

| Modpack | RAM for the game |
|---|---|
| Light (under 100 mods) | 4–6 GB |
| Medium (100–200 mods) | 6–8 GB |
| Heavy (200+ mods) | 8–10 GB |

Leave at least 4 GB for your computer. Giving the game more than it needs doesn't make it faster and can make it stutter.

## Set it in the ATLauncher

1. Open ATLauncher and click **Settings** in the right-hand menu.
2. Open the **Java/Minecraft** tab.
3. Set **Maximum Memory/RAM** to the amount you want.
4. Click **Save**.

To set it for one instance, go to **Instances**, click **Settings** on the instance, and change **Maximum Memory/RAM** there.

Start the game again for the change to apply.

## Still running out of memory?

- Close other heavy programs while you play.
- Check you're on 64-bit Java. The launcher's bundled Java is usually fine.
- Remove shader packs and very large resource packs to test.

Playing on a Beacon server? The server needs enough RAM too. See [How Much RAM Does a Modded Minecraft Server Need?](/knowledgebase/modded-minecraft-server-ram).
