A **sub-user (team member)** can help manage a Minecraft server you own without receiving access to your account password, billing, or other servers.

Each sub-user signs in with their own Beacon account and receives only the permissions you grant for that specific server.

> **[WARNING]** Only grant the permissions a team member actually needs. **Administrator** provides extensive access to that server, including the ability to edit files, restore backups, and manage other users.

## How to Add a Team Member to a Minecraft Server

1. Sign in to Beacon Hosting and open [Servers](https://www.beaconhosting.org/servers).
2. Select the server you want the team member to access.
3. Open **Users** in the server sidebar.
4. Click **Add Team Member**.
5. Enter the team member's **User Email**.
6. Select the permissions they should have.
7. Choose a permission preset such as **Viewer**, **Console Access**, **File Manager**, **Developer**, or **Administrator**, or select individual permissions manually.
8. Make sure at least **one permission** is selected.
9. Click **Invite User**.

The user will then appear under **Team Members** on the **Users** page.

You can return to this page later to change their permissions or remove their access.

## What Does a Minecraft Sub-User Receive?

Beacon sends an email notifying the person that they have been added to the server.

### If they already have a Beacon account

They can sign in using their existing Beacon account.

The server will appear in their **Servers** list with the permissions you assigned.

### If they do not have a Beacon account

Beacon creates an account for them and sends a welcome email containing a temporary password.

They should sign in at [Beacon Login](https://www.beaconhosting.org/auth/login) and change the temporary password from their **Account** page.

A sub-user does **not** need your account password.

## Minecraft Server Sub-User Permission Presets

Beacon provides several permission presets to make it easier to give a team member the appropriate level of access.

### Viewer

Useful for someone who needs to inspect the server without managing it.

### Console Access

Useful for someone who needs to interact with the server console and perform common server controls such as starting, stopping, or restarting the server.

### File Manager

Useful for someone who needs to manage server files.

Depending on the individual permissions selected, this can include file management and SFTP access.

### Developer

Provides a broader set of server-management permissions, including areas such as console, files, SFTP, startup configuration, and the package catalog.

### Administrator

Provides extensive access to the server, including management of files, backups, users, and other server functions.

Only use Administrator when the team member genuinely needs that level of access.

## Can a Sub-User Access My Other Minecraft Servers?

**No.**

A sub-user receives access to the specific server where you added them.

They do not automatically receive access to your other Beacon Hosting servers.

If they need access to another server, you must add them to that server separately.

## Can a Sub-User See My Billing?

**No.**

Sub-user access is associated with the individual Minecraft server rather than giving the user access to your account's billing area.

They also do not receive your Beacon account password.

## Can I Choose Individual Sub-User Permissions?

**Yes.**

You can use one of Beacon's permission presets or select individual permissions manually.

This allows you to give someone only the access they need.

For example:

* A moderator may only need player-related permissions.
* A developer may need console and file access.
* A server administrator may need files, console, backups, and user management.
* A person monitoring the server may only need viewing permissions.

The principle is simple: **give each team member the minimum access required for their role.**

## Important Sub-User Restrictions

You cannot grant a permission that you do not have yourself.

The **server owner cannot be added as a sub-user** because they already own the server and have the corresponding owner-level access.

## How to Remove a Minecraft Sub-User

To remove someone's access:

1. Open **Servers**.
2. Select the relevant server.
3. Open **Users**.
4. Find the team member under **Team Members**.
5. Remove their access.

Removing the sub-user from the server does not require changing your own account password.

## Troubleshooting

### "This user is already a subuser"

The user already has access to the server.

Open **Users** and edit their existing permissions instead of sending another invitation.

### "The user is the owner"

The email address belongs to the account that owns the server.

The owner cannot be added as a sub-user because they already have owner access.

### "Add Team Member" is missing or disabled

Your account may not have permission to create sub-users on that server.

The server owner can grant the appropriate user-management permission, including **Users → Add new subusers**.

### The team member cannot see the server

Check that:

1. The invitation was sent to the correct email address.
2. They signed in using that same email address.
3. They are looking under **Servers**, not Billing.
4. They have not accidentally created or signed into a different Beacon account.

If the correct account still cannot see the server, check their permissions from **Users**.

## Why Use Beacon Hosting for Minecraft Servers?

[Beacon Hosting](https://www.beaconhosting.org/servers) provides Minecraft server hosting with **Java and Bedrock support, NVMe storage, DDoS protection, and a web-based control panel**.

Beacon's server management tools include **console access, file management, player management, server configuration, backups, SFTP, and sub-user permissions**, allowing multiple people to help manage a Minecraft server without sharing the owner's account credentials.

Beacon Hosting supports popular Minecraft server software including **Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt**.

Plans start from **$1/GB**, with an eligible **2-day free trial and no card required**.

If you're running a Minecraft SMP, survival server, modded server, community server, or other multiplayer project and need multiple people to manage it, Beacon's sub-user system lets you give each team member access appropriate to their role.
