Two-factor authentication (2FA) asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app after your password. Even if someone has your password, they cannot sign in without that code.
Beacon uses a TOTP authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, Apple Passwords, and similar). SMS codes are not used.
Info
2FA is set on the Account page, not under Billing. Open Account after you sign in.
Enable 2FA
- Sign in at beaconhosting.org/auth/login.
- Open Account from your profile menu (bottom of the sidebar), or go to beaconhosting.org/account.
- Find the Two-factor authentication card. Status should show Disabled.
- Enter your Current password.
- Click Enable 2FA.
- In Set up two-factor authentication:
- Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, or
- Click the secret field / copy button and enter the key manually.
- Type the 6-digit Verification code from the app.
- Click Verify & enable.
The card status should change to Enabled, and you should see “Your account is protected.”
You need a password on the account to turn 2FA on. If you only ever signed in with Google and never set a password, set one on the Password card first.
What happens at login
The next time you sign in, enter your email and password as usual. Beacon then asks for the 6-digit code. You can paste it or type it; the form submits when all 6 digits are entered.
If you lose your authenticator
Beacon does not issue backup codes. Keep the authenticator app (or a copy of the secret) somewhere you will not lose.
To turn 2FA off later, use the same Two-factor authentication card: enter your Current password and a current Authenticator code, then click Disable 2FA.
If you cannot generate a code and cannot sign in, contact support from another account or open a ticket so we can help recover access.
Troubleshooting
Enable 2FA stays disabled / password error
The password must be your current Beacon account password, not the authenticator code.
The verification code is rejected
Use the newest 6-digit code (they rotate about every 30 seconds). Check that the phone’s time is set automatically.
You never see a QR code
The password step has to succeed first. If the dialog never opens, refresh /account and try again.
