DDoS Protection
Every plan includes DDoS filtering on your Minecraft ports. What it does, and what to do if you think you're being attacked.
Every Beacon Hosting plan includes DDoS protection. There's nothing to buy and nothing to turn on.
What is a DDoS attack?
A DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack floods your server's address with junk traffic from many machines at once. The aim is to overload it so real players lag out or can't connect at all.
How we protect your server
DDoS filtering sits in front of your Minecraft ports. Traffic reaches the filter before it reaches your server, so attacks hit the filter, not your players.
- Always on. Protection is on from the moment your server is created.
- Included on every plan. It isn't a paid add-on.
Signs of an attack
An attack can look like:
- Every player lagging or disconnecting at the same time
- Players getting "Timed out" or "Can't connect to server" while the panel shows the server running
- Problems that start suddenly, often after an argument with someone in-game or on Discord
Lag isn't always an attack. A heavy plugin, a big modpack or too little RAM causes lag too. Check your console for errors, and look at memory use in the panel.
If you think you're being attacked
- Don't restart over and over. It won't stop an attack and makes things harder to diagnose.
- Note the time it started, and roughly how many players were affected.
- Open a ticket with your server's name, the time it started and what you saw. Our team will look into it.
Warning
Only share your server's address with the people you want to play. An address posted publicly is easy to target.
Keeping your server safe
- Only give panel access to people you trust, and only the permissions they need (Users page).
- Keep plugins and mods up to date. Old versions can have known security holes.
- Use whitelists or password plugins for private servers.
